Home to England`s highest mountain and 12 of the largest lakes in the country, The Lake District is one of the most visited regions in the UK, attracting almost 16 million tourists each year

The Lake District is located in the North West of England in Cumbria and is one of the largest National Parks in the UK.

With rugged countryside, breathtaking views and picture postcard villages, the Lake District is a magnet for ramblers, nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. It is also the perfect location for couples in search of a romantic weekend away to one of England`s most scenic tourist destinations.

Enjoy a relaxing cruise on one of the lakes, scramble to the dizzying heights of Scafell Pike where you`ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the entire region or try your hand at wind surfing or sailing. Alternatively, simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery. You might even be fortunate enough to spot a red squirrel, golden eagle or osprey.

Outdoor activities

For adventure lovers and thrill seekers, the rugged landscape is a haven for numerous outdoor activities and there are outdoor centres located throughout the area. From gentle pursuits such as hill walking and birdwatching to those appealing to the more active such as mountain biking, rock climbing, horse riding, kayaking, caving and various water sports.

Other attractions

There are plenty of other activities, for rainy days or for those who prefer a slower pace. The Lake district is known for its picturesque villages and bustling market towns. Grasmere is one of the prettiest villages and the lake lies to the south of the village where there are some gentle walks to be explored. Grasmere is where William Wordsworth was raised and you can visit two of his homes, Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount and see the family grave at St. Oswalds Church.

Hawkshead is home to the Beatrix Potter Gallery (run by the National Trust) and Hawkshead Grammar School, which Wordsworth attended. In the village there are several good pubs, tea shops and caf?s. Other popular villages include Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside.

Close to the market town of Keswick is Derwent water, which is said to be one of the prettiest lakes in the area. You can take a 50 minute cruise across the lake, stopping off a points along the way to enjoy the local scenery. Other lakes to explore by cruise include Windermere, Coniston Water and Ullswater.

Accommodation

With over 900 B & Bs, hotels, camp-sites, cottages and log cabins, there is accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. From five star luxury spas to traditional stone cottages with breath taking lake and mountain views.

The Lake District is the kind of place you will want to visit over and over again and a holiday cottage or time share is perfect for those looking for an investment in the UK. If you have an existing holiday investment abroad and want to purchase something closer to home in the Lake District or anywhere else then selling a timeshare may help fund your new holiday retreat.
