London City Break Guide

National Gallery

National Gallery

London is one of the most visited destinations in the world and it is ideal for a city break. This thriving and culture-packed capital city is absolutely crammed with visitor attractions and destinations, so it helps to have some idea of what you want to see and do before you arrive, to avoid becoming overwhelmed by choice once you do arrive!

The traditional bits of London are largely around Victoria and Westminster. West End theatre and the big cinemas are focused in Convent Garden & Soho and there are plenty of museums and art galleries on the South Bank, East End and Trafalgar Square. Shopping takes place everywhere, but especially Regent Street, Oxford Street, Camden and Convent Garden and the most popular concert and sporting venues tend to be located on the edge of the city centre.

If you`re a fan of the British Royal Family, then you can join the crowds that gather outside Buckingham Palace every morning at 11.30 for the famous Changing of The Guards and then visit the palace itself.

For culture and art, you`ll be spoiled. Head to the National Gallery for some of the world`s most famous artworks, the National Portrait Gallery for a superb Tudor Gallery and modern displays, the British Museum for over 8 million incredible artefacts and the hugely impressive Tate Modern, which is one of the world`s leading art galleries and - along with many of the capital`s museums and galleries - entirely free to visit. Kids will adore the Natural History Museum with its breathtaking dinosaur displays and the hugely entertaining and interactive Science museum. Some of the galleries also do late nights with music and far more relaxed atmospheres than the bustling day time - look online to find out more.

St Paul`s Cathedral on the other hand isn`t free to visit, but it is an awe-inspiring experience and has incredible views from the Golden Gallery. The London Eye is another tourist must-do, costing around £17 for adults, but with good family packages.

Wembley Stadium tours are hugely popular with sports and music fans and last around 90 minutes. See the new and impressive Exhibition of Champions.

There are also a surprising number of free things to enjoy in London - see the free summer shows in the City Hall and the entertainers in Convent Garden. The Thames is also spectacular to walk down and there are a great number of gorgeous parks such as Hyde Park, Kew Gardens, Green Park and Regents Park - try the Royal Parks Walk which takes three hours to walk across five of the city centre parks using an excellent interactive map that is found online.

And don`t forget the dazzling nightlife! There are trendy bars aplenty all across the city centre and tourist spots to enjoy in Leicester Square and Convent Garden. You can buy last minute tickets to star studded shows such as We Will Rock You or take in a film or music concert - the list of opportunities is endless!
